In 2019, I made the decision to study abroad and bring my family along with me, choosing the right destination was crucial, had several as I wanted to ensure positive experience for all my family members. I considered several European destinations to choose from, but the research process was challenging, However, the more I learned about Sweden's education system and student life, the more I was convinced it was the right choice for me and my family.
These are the reasons that led me to apply to a Swedish university:
1. Resident permits for all family members: When I started my search, the most important factor for me was the ability to bring my family with me during my entire period of study. Through the regulations of the Swedish Migration Agency, I was pleased to learn that my higher education in Sweden allows me to bring my family to Sweden and all my family members are going to get resident permits.
2. Free Schools: Sweden's offer of free education for preschool and school-aged children was a big factor for my family, as we have three children. The quality of education in Sweden is highly regarded and among the top-ranked in the world, and we wouldn't have to worry about school fees.
3. Healthcare System: international students in Sweden who are enrolled in programs longer than 2 years are exempt from the requirement of health insurance and can register with their family members for the Swedish healthcare system. This allows them to receive medical treatment at local care centers in their area of residence. As a family with children, we appreciate the opportunity to complete necessary vaccinations and medical check-ups for our children and find Sweden to be a suitable place for us.
3. Free Language Courses: The option for my husband to take free Swedish language courses after moving to Sweden was also a positive aspect that appealed to him and influenced our decision.
4. Work permit during and after studies: as a student in higher education in Sweden, you are able to work full-time or start your own business, unlike in other countries where students can only work on weekends and holidays. Additionally, the spouse of an international student has the same opportunities to work or be self-employed while you study. This is beneficial for families who need to cover living expenses such as rent, food, and daily costs.
Additionally, upon completion of a degree in Sweden that is at least two semesters, you can apply for a permit that lasts for one year. During this time, you can search for a job in your field of study, start your own business, or become self-employed, which helps students to remain in Sweden and kickstart their careers after graduation.
Having completed my studies at Mälardalens University in Sweden, I can say that it was a fantastic experience for both me and my family. I believe we made the right choice.
